Importance of independent press

An independent press is essential to a functioning democracy. It acts as a watchdog, holding governments, corporations, and institutions accountable for their actions. By reporting facts without influence from political or financial powers, independent journalism ensures the public receives truthful, unbiased information. This empowers citizens to make informed decisions, engage in civic life, and challenge injustice. Without an independent press, corruption can thrive unchecked and public discourse becomes vulnerable to manipulation. In an era of misinformation and censorship, a free press defends the public’s right to know and is a cornerstone of liberty, transparency, and democratic resilience.

Totally agree. However, in my opinion, alongside an independent press, a critical and informed citizenry is crucial for a real and effective democracy. Even major media producers may introduce biases (even unintentionally) and only by consulting diverse sources you can extract the truth and make up your own mind. It is your responsibility as a committed member of the society to always keep your guard up, analyse and quarantine the information which is too much close to your own ideas or beliefs.
